A legal team that took to the streets to provide meals for needy children has raised $10,000 with a sponsored walk through Hamilton.

The Bermuda Bar Association this week presented donations reaped from its very first 4K charity sponsored walk, at a special gathering outside Sessions House.

The proceeds were divided equally between the Coalition for the Protection of Children, and CedarBridge Academy’s school meals programme.

The walk, dedicated in honour of the late retired Chief Justice Sir Richard Ground, saw about 160 judges, lawyers and legal support staff set out for a fundraiser that is hoped to become an annual event.

The cheques were presented by Bar Association president Justin Williams with vice-president Richard Horseman, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Cindy Clarke, Bar Council member Elizabeth Christopher and Wakefield Quinn lawyer Margaret Burgess-Howie.

The Coalition’s Kelly Hunt was on hand to accept the funds, along with CedarBridge social worker Marilyn Jackson.

Offering a statement of thanks, the Coalition wrote: “The need for the continuation of the Breakfast for Every Child programme is increasingly clear as record numbers of low-income families continue to come to the Coalition for assistance and are finding it more and more difficult to provide for their families basic needs.

“Thanks to you, we are moving closer to our goal of ensuring that Bermuda’s children have the best possible start to their day, thus enabling them to reach their full academic potential.”
