North Village raises $9k for cancer mom

North Village Community Club president Stephen Coddington presented a cheque for $9,000 to Kamala Smith and Nakia Smith (seated). Mrs Smith, a mother of two, is no stranger to the North Village community and is currently undergoing treatment for a rare cancer has left her family struggling to make ends meet. The money was raised at a game and from donations, including from junior players. The family of cancer patient Kamala Smith has been gifted $9,000 by the North Village Community Club.

Ms Smith, a mother of two whose ongoing treatment for a rare cancer has left her family struggling to make ends meet, is no stranger to North Village.

Her husband Nakia has played for the Premier Team, the Corona Team, and now the Masters Team.

Both her sons are also North Village players: Kenori in the under-ten age group, and Nakai in the under-eight.

A recent fundraiser game, won by the Corona team, raised almost $5,000 for the cause.

“The event was very well attended — everyone at the game had a wonderful time, and there was a true family spirit to the occasion,” North Village president Stephen Coddington said.

“While the game resulted in a win for the Corona team at 8-4, the result wasn’t that important. The real winner was the cause.”

The under-ten Reds team also pitched in, raising $3,000 — and the cost of Kenori and Nakai’s North Village registration fees for the 2014-15 season, at $300 per child, was generously covered by coach Shannon Burchall and his family.

After getting a further $1,000 from donors such as the Brazilian Football Charitable Trust, Mr Coddington presented Ms Smith with a cheque at a ceremony in the gardens of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

“Kamala was in great spirits and looked well,” he said. “Her tears of joy and appreciation were humbling.”

Ms Smith, a 31-year-old newlywed whose story was published in The Royal Gazette last month, described herself as “overwhelmed”.

“I knew very little of the fundraiser, and the efforts of the North Village football teams,” she said. “I was brought to tears because I am so grateful that people have rallied together like this for me.

“As a mother, I am touched by the consideration given to my sons. I’m very appreciative that their fees had been settled for the coming season. I want to thank everyone that supported this fundraiser. My heart is full with the love I have received.”

North Village, a registered charity, continues to raise funds to assist the family, through club members taking part in the May 24th half-marathon.
