Homeless man stole television, tools

A homeless man who stole a television from one car and almost $5,000 in tools from another was jailed this morning during an appearance in Magistrates’ Court.

Andrew Arorash, 44, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft, both of which occurred earlier this month in Pembroke.

The court heard that sometime between May 7 and 8, Arorash was caught on CCTV footage stealing a 19in flat screen television and a speaker box from a car which had been left at a Pembroke garage for repairs.

And on May 12, Arorash stole $4,827 worth of tools and equipment from a Bermuda Housing Corporation vehicle, which had been left locked on Ewing Street earlier that day.

The court heard that Arorash was identified due to the CCTV footage and subsequently arrested. While he was described as “very uncooperative” in an initial police interview, cursing at officers, he later admitted both offences.

He told police he threw out the television after he plugged it in and it failed to work, while he sold the tools to get money for drugs. He said he couldn’t remember taking a speaker box from the first vehicle.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Arorash into custody, ordering a social inquiry report, a drug assessment and a psychiatric report. He is set to return to court in July for sentencing.
