Man swallowed ‘weed’, court told

A Paget man today was fined $1,000 after admitting he swallowed “a quarter of weed” to bring into Bermuda from New York.

Terry Simmons, 40, of Tribe Road Number 5, was arrested at the L F Wade International Airport on June 22 after Customs officers suspected he was in possession of illicit drugs.

After being x-rayed at the Lambe Foggo Urgent Care facility in St David’s, police officers were informed that Simmons had ingested several foreign objects and subsequent analysis showed 16 grams of cannabis.

Simmons later told officers that he had purchased the cannabis while on a trip to New York City to see “a lady friend” and that he brought it back to Bermuda because he wasn’t able to smoke all of it while in the city.

“You know the old saying,” said Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, “what happens in New York stays in New York, with or without your clothes on.”

Mr Warner fined Simmons $1,000 for the offence.
