The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Bermuda will be hosting a tag day in central locations today.

Money raised from the fundraiser will directly impact the lives of hundreds of local young people, said the programme’s national director Traci Burgess. The money will go towards supporting the programme’s delivery and expansion initiatives. It will also help offset travel expenses for current Gold Award participants travelling to St Vincent & The Grenadines for their qualifying expedition and provide funding for three Bermuda delegates looking to attend the International Award’s ‘Emerging Leaders Forum’ in Seoul, South Korea this October.

Two well known Bermuda residents have already shown their support for the fundraising effort by purchasing the first set of tags — they are Governor George Fergusson and his wife, Margaret. Mr Burgess encouraged people to follow the Fergusson’s good example and giving to the worthy cause. “The Award is one of Bermuda’s leading youth development programmes for young people between the ages of 14 to 25,” he said. “Our participants thrive as they work through challenging, but non-competitive, activities consisting of community service, personal skills, physical recreation and adventurous journeys.

“All of these facets combined lead to the development of well-rounded global citizens who understand the importance of achieving their personal best.”

There will be two other chances later this year to help the local charity. You can support its golf tournament on September 26 or take part in the Expedition Relay Challenge on November 22.
