Drunk motorcyclist banned for a year

A motorcyclist who was seen riding his bike so erratically outside Hamilton Police Station he almost fell off and crashed into a police car found himself in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Steve Phipps, 39, of Pembroke, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and failing to supply a breath sample for analysis.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith said that Phipps was caught on police surveillance cameras riding his bike up and down the sidewalk outside of the Police Station on Victoria Street on December 1 last year.

Officers who attended the scene observed that the defendant appeared unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Phipps $1,500 and disqualified him from all vehicles for 12 months.
