The koi fish in a pond at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess are being moved to a new location on the Belmont Hills Resort golf course.

A pond filled with koi, an Asian fish, has been part of the Fairmont Hamilton’s garden for years but is now being moved as part of a $90 million renovation to the hotel.

Allan Federer, the general manager of the hotel, said: “It’s part of the redevelopment of the hotel.

“That entire area is being brought down so that you will be able to see the Great Sound from the hotel lobby.”

Of the koi, he said: “They will be taken to the Belmont golf course, half of them are already there and the rest should be there later.

“I haven’t been here that long but I know they should have a great home.”

A hotel statement said: “Phase two of the more than $90 million renovation of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess includes enhancements to the hotel grounds.

“The removal of the koi pond is part of the scope of this project.

“The relocation of the koi fish to appropriate locations on the Island is already underway and will continue as we prepare for this project.

“In the spring, the hotel will debut dramatic new landscaping that will enhance the experience for both hotel guests and Bermuda residents.”

The Royal Gazette was unable to contact Belmont Hills for comment on the future plans for the fish.
