Former Premier will be guest speaker at Labour Day banquet

Former Premier Ewart Brown

Former Premier Ewart Brown will be the guest speaker at the Bermuda Industrial Union’s annual Labour Day banquet later this month.

Dr Brown became Premier in 2006, leading the Progressive Labour Party to a third successive general election victory in 2007 before retiring from politics in 2010, 17 years after first being elected to Parliament.

Dr. Brown joins an illustrious list of local and overseas speakers who have addressed union members and guests at the annual celebration. The first speaker in 1983, was Atlanta mayor Andrew Young. Others speakers include the late AME Bishop Vinton Anderson, Brother Gerald Brangman, who was one of the founders of the Bermuda Workers Association, New York City councilwoman, Diane Foster, and Hope4Life founder David Bascome. Last year the guest speaker was Rev. Nicholas Tweed.

The banquet will be held at the Fairmont Southampton Resort and Spa on Friday, August, 29, starting with cocktails at 6.45pm and dinner at 7.45pm.

The BIU’s Joint Labour Day Committee has also arranged a Labour Day march through the City of Hamilton beginning at Union Square at 11.30am on Monday, September 1.

Tickets for the banquet cost $100 and are available from LaVerne Furbert at 292-0044 or lfurbert@biu.bm.
