Dismasted yacht hits rocks

A yacht that lost its mast out at sea and then struck rocks on its way to the Island is now moored safely in St George’s, according to Bermuda Maritime Operations.

The vessel Condor issued a mayday call on Tuesday after losing its mast about 115 miles to the west southwest of Bermuda, and called for diesel oil so that it could continue to shore.

The yacht was guided to anchor and then made its way along the South Shore, but struck the rocks off Castle Harbour at around 2.30am today and ran aground.

A vessel from Bermuda Yacht Services helped the stricken craft into St George’s Harbour, where it moored at Ordnance Island at about 9am.

It followed yesterday’s rescue of the fishing boat Peanuts II, which issued a distress call via VHS radio after taking on water. The boat was about five miles northeast of the Sea Buoy, with two people on board, when it came into difficulties.

The pilot boat St David came to its assistance, along with another fishing vessel that picked up the distress call. With the help of the fishing boat Serioula, it was brought back to its mooring in St David’s shortly before 5pm.
