Fay keeps firefighters busy

Tropical Storm Fay: Gave firefighters a busy weekend

Tropical Storm Fay has led to a busy weekend for firefighters, with the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) receiving more than 100 calls.

Service spokeswoman Sgt Russann Francis said that as of 10pm last night, the service received 105 emergency calls, and are still working diligently to safely address some of those requests.

And the spokeswoman reminded the public to contact the service at 296-7559 before attempting to burn debris.

“In light of all the trees, leaves and debris that has been deposited Island-wide, I’d like to remind the public that only horticultural waste is to be burned,” she said. “Prior to any controlled burning of horticultural waste, we would like to stress to the public to call the BFRS. This will alleviate the unnecessary allocation of emergency resources to these areas.

“Whenever one is conducting a controlled burn they must call the fire service with the address where burn will be conducted, the name and contact number of person responsible, and a landmark near the area of burn.”

Along with notifying the BFRS, the public must ensure that any controlled burn is carried out in an open space, have a nearby house line charged with water, consider the winds and keep the fire away from hazards and materials that may catch fire.

“If after these precautions the fire becomes uncontrollable, they are to call our 911 emergency line for assistance,” Sgt Francis added.
