Lightning surprise leaves Port Royal manager unharmed

Port Royal Golf Course

Thunderstorms delivered a shock to Port Royal Golf Course’s Alex Madeiros when he got a jolt down a phone line during Friday’s bad weather.

As electrical storms rumbled across the Island Mr Madeiros, who is director of golf at Port Royal, picked up the phone and was hit by a power surge. Surges of lightning are able to travel along telephone wires.

“I was at my desk. Funny thing is I moved myself away from the computer, picked up the phone and was on it when the strike blew it out of my hand,” he said.

“My arms feel like Tyson punched it, and my fingers feel as if I touched a hotplate.”

Mr Madeiros attended King Edward VII Memorial Hospital as a precaution.
