Man pleads guilty to $6,000 liquor theft

A 32-year-old man has admitted stealing more than $6,000 worth of beer and spirits.

Navin Desai, from Redkiln Road, Hamilton Parish, appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning and pleaded guilty to four charges of theft from Gosling’s.

He admitted taking $1,251.55 worth of alcohol on August 29, $2,100 worth on September 13, $1,116.25 worth on September 26 and $1619.85 worth on September 27.

Scores of cases of drinks were taken, including Chivas Regal, Hennessy, Guinness, Bud Light, Magners, Tennent’s Super and Corona. None of the items were recovered.

Desai is originally from India and his work permit is due to expire in July next year.

Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe set a sentencing date of November 21 and released Desai on $5,000 bail with one like surety. He must report to Hamilton Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until his next court appearance.

A co-accused, Whakail Lightbourne, 28, pleaded not guilty to the four charges of stealing alcohol.

Mr Lightbourne, from Spice Lily Lane, Sandys, will appear for trial on March 5 and was given $5,000 bail with one like surety.
