Police to keep close watch over celebrations

Police issued a call for safety in advance of the New Year’s festivities, noting that Christmas had been quiet — but that there had still been two serious incidents on the Island’s roads.

“Do your part by acting responsibly, making good decisions, having tolerance for your neighbours — and, in cases of crime, if you see something, say something,” advised Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Martin Weekes.

Mr Weekes thanked the public for their support over Christmas, which saw “few” incidents of violence.

“Some minor incidents were swiftly dealt with,” he added.

However, Mr Weekes said there had been two single vehicle collisions with people remaining in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.

Over the coming holiday, Police, assisted by reserves, will carry out extra patrols, and maintain a strong, visible presence at events such as New Year’s Eve celebrations and football matches on Thursday.

New Year’s Eve is often associated with unhealthy levels of alcohol consumption, Mr Weekes noted.

“If you plan to drink, we urge you to plan not to drive.”
