A busy holiday lies ahead for the Bermuda Heroes Weekend, the Bermuda Road Safety Council has warned.

“Recently there has been a marked increase in the amount of collisions on our roads,” council chairman Carlton Crockwell said. “We must do all that we can to discourage this trend.”

Ultimately, he conceded, improving conditions on the roads was a matter of attitude.

“It does not matter what we recommend — it comes back to a person’s mindset,” Dr Crockwell said.

The council’s motto is “Think, choose, live”:

• Think about your driving habits and the choices you make when driving

• Choose to make better decisions when driving or riding

• Live to celebrate special moments with loved ones

The group calls for road users to watch their speed and remain focused strictly on the driving task by avoiding distracting technology.

Those who celebrate with alcohol must not get behind the wheel and drive, said Dr Crockwell, who added that the group would send a clear message to organisers of festivities this weekend to be mindful.
