Senior, 81, dies after bike crash

A senior seriously injured after a road accident two weeks ago has died.

Leon Smith, 81, passed away at about 1.30pm yesterday, Police confirmed.

“Mr Smith was travelling on his motorcycle when he collided with a truck at the junction of Cavendish Road and Lane Hill in Pembroke at about 1.50pm [on] Monday, June 1,” a police spokesman said.

“He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and remained in the ICU until his untimely passing. Inquiries regarding this fatality are under way and any witnesses or persons who were travelling through the Cavendish Road, Lane Hill, Pembroke area at about 1.45pm June 1, should contact the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011.

“A family liaison officer has been assigned to the family.”

Mr Smith’s death marks the sixth road traffic fatality of the year.

Shawn Crockwell, Minister of Tourism Development and Transport, expressed his condolences to Mr Smith’s friends and family.

“My thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve his passing,” he said.
