Public urged to take part in Mandela Day
Members of the public are being invited to take part in Mandela Day, with Imagine Bermuda helping to facilitate those who want to give a hand.
A spokesman for the organisation said: “In the spirit of the example lived by Mandela, we have been expanding the collaboration supporting this global initiative, across all sectors of the Island.
“In addition to encouraging residents to choose how they would lend a hand on July 18 in their neighbourhood, club, church or favourite charity, we have secured some hubs, which all have a plan to facilitate any assistance that residents may want to provide. These hubs are open to receive calls anytime this week, in the lead-up to the Day, from any interested resident.”
Among the hubs are Age Concern (238-7525), who have a list of seniors in need of specific assistance, Chewstick (292-2439), who are looking for help renovating their new venue, King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (239-1569), who are looking for volunteers to read to patients, the Salvation Army Shelter (292-0601), who are looking for assistance with maintenance work, and local rest homes (292-7802).
Organisers have also announced that, in collaboration with Bermuda College and Chewstick, they will be hosting an event on July 17 at the campus Student Centre, featuring music, poetry, story sharing and cross-community networking.
