Car ablaze in Paget

A car was in flames on Southcote Road at about 8am this morning.

A witness told The Royal Gazette that she believed there was no one inside the vehicle.

The witness said: “There were people standing to the side, it looked like any passengers got out. You could hear it popping like it was going to explode — I could hear sirens in the background.”

Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Acting Lieutenant Jamel Albouy said the service responded to the reported care fire minutes before 8am.

“We responded to the incident with one appliance from our Port Royal Station and four personnel,” he said. “On arrival, it was discovered that the engine compartment area of the vehicle was on fire.

“Firefighters dressed in breathing apparatus manned with a fire hose line quickly extinguished the blaze.

“It is understood that the driver noticed smoke emitting from the vehicle while driving and made his escape unharmed prior to the front end becoming fully involved.”

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
