Bermuda shivers as cold front passes

After a warm weekend, Bermuda bundled up yesterday as temperatures dropped sharply across the Island.

James Dodgson, deputy director of the Bermuda Weather Service, said a strong autumn cold front passing by the Island Sunday evening had caused temperatures and humidity to fall.

“The source region of the cold air behind the front was continental Canada, and it was even cold enough to produce some snow showers in upstate New York,” he said.

“However, as is always the case, the cold continental air is modified by the relatively warm waters of the west Atlantic Ocean as it approaches Bermuda, and that is the main reason why we never observe snow here.”

While Saturday and Sunday boasted high temperatures of 80.1F (26.7C) and 79.9F (26.6C) respectively, the high on Monday fell to 73.8F (23.2C). Scattered showers on Monday night led to even colder temperatures, including a low of 64.2F (17.9C) — breaking the previous October 19 record. Mr Dodgson, however, said the temperature is far from the lowest recorded on the Island in October. On October 22, 1974, temperatures plummeted to 57F (13.9C).

“It is not unusual to see our first significant cold front moving through our area in late October, and this cycle continues well into the Spring time,” Mr Dodgson said. “However, as we will see over the next few days, temperatures are expected to warm up again as this cold front moves back into our area from the southeast as a warm front.”
