Bowie and Iman brightened up my working day
Elizabeth Schaefer was annoyed at having to work on a Saturday in her furniture store, but her day soon brightened up when she saw David Bowie and his wife Iman walk in.
Ms Schaefer was owner and general manager of the store at the time which went by the name of The Living Centre. “It must have been in the mid 90s,” she recalled. “I remember hearing that David Bowie was on the Island, that he was living in Somerset — I knew that much. I hated having to work on a weekend but then one day, all of a sudden, he walked in with Iman and I remember thinking to myself, ‘Gosh he is a lot shorter than I imagined.’ She looked taller than him.
“I had a sales lady on the second level who attacked clients as soon as they came up the stairs so she dealt with them but I remember thinking how cool it was to have David Bowie in your store. He actually ended up buying some furniture from us. I think it was some book cases. I must have been in my early 30s and I loved his music. Let’s Dance, China Girl and Modern Love — all three of those the songs helped to shape my 80s playlist back then.”
