Murderers get appeals thrown out

Three murderers will remain behind bars after bids to overturn their convictions were dismissed by the Court of Appeal.

Devon Hewey protested his innocence and demanded to leave the dock as soon as appeal justices revealed their judgment yesterday morning.

He shouted: “You are locking up an innocent man, you might as well give us 100 years,” as he was led out of the dock alongside co-defendant, Jay Dill.

Hewey and Dill were both jailed for the 2011 murder of footballer Randy Robinson, who was shot dead on Border Lane North, Devonshire.

“The truth is going to come out, I did not do nothing, I did not kill that guy,” protested Hewey as he left the court.

Hewey and Dill were initially sentenced to serve at least 40 years of a life sentence before being eligible for parole. However, appeal judges reduced the minimum term both must serve before they can be considered for parole to 25 years, in line with a 2013 ruling by the Privy Council.

Meanwhile, Norris Simpson, who was jailed for life for the murder of social worker Ida James, also saw his bid to overturn his conviction dismissed by the Court of Appeal.

Simpson was jailed for life in April 2013 after being convicted of killing Ms James, who was found dead in her home on September 2, 2011. During his Supreme Court trial the court heard that she had been stabbed around 60 times.

He was initially ordered to serve a minimum of 23 years before becoming eligible for parole, but that sentence was reduced as a result of the Privy Council ruling, which found that the maximum minimum sentence for murder was 15 years.

As Simpson left the court yesterday he said: “Where is the justice in this court? There was no evidence in this case.”

Finally in a third, unrelated case, Julian Washington was told that three out of four grounds of his appeal had been dismissed by the appeal judges. He will have to wait to find out whether a fourth ground is successful.

Washington was convicted of the 2012 murder of Stefan Burgess and attempted murder of Devana Bremer.

Both victims were shot while attending a party at a home on the Glebe Road. Washington was jailed for life in September 2014 for the crime.
