Motorist blasted for driving backwards

Wrong way: a passenger in a vehicle travelling behind the car filmed the journey

The Bermuda Road Safety Council has condemned the actions of a motorist who was filmed driving backwards along North Shore Road.

The viral 74-second clip has accrued 21,000 views and 367 “likes” so far, after being posted to the Bermuda Memes Facebook page on Thursday, as well as being widely shared around the island.

The footage was filmed on a rainy day from a vehicle trailing a small blue car as it reverses at speed along the road in the Shelly Bay area.

The two males witnessing the incident can be heard laughing in disbelief and making comments such as, “What is going on right now?” and “This is madness”.

Eventually, the offending vehicle turns off the road at the Esso gas station and the clip ends.

Facebook commenters have been divided in their opinion of the video, with some finding it distasteful and others humorous.

“This isn’t funny. Someone could have been hurt or killed,” said one viewer.

“He did have skills though, he drove better in reverse than a lot people drive facing the right way,” said another.

BRSC chairwoman Erica Rance Mill urged anyone with information on the matter to contact the police.

“The actions of the driver clearly are in contravention of the rules of the road, namely the Road Traffic Act,” she added.

Meanwhile, police spokesman Dwayne Caines said: “The Bermuda Police Service is aware of this video and is reviewing the footage to determine whether or not any offences have been committed.

“Witnesses or persons that can identify the driver are encouraged to contact the main police telephone number on 295-0011.”

Bermuda suffered its third road traffic fatality of 2016 on Friday night, when 22-year-old motorcyclist Azah Dowling died after a crash with a car.
