A workman was listed as “critical but stable” in hospital last night after falling between 25 and 35 feet while painting a roof.

The victim, 36, is said to have been on a ladder at a Bermuda Housing Corporation rental property in St Augustine Lane, near Parsons Road, Pembroke, when it became unsteady at about 8.50am yesterday.

He suffered hand, chest and abdominal injuries and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Susan Hill Davidson, acting chief environmental health officer, and acting senior safety and health officer for the Bermuda Government, was at the scene shortly after the accident.

She told The Royal Gazette she had begun an investigation and many details still had to be clarified.

“We don’t have all the information,” she said. “We are waiting for forensics.”

Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service staff officer Mark Prior said four personnel went to the location and administered emergency medical assistance.

He said: “BFRS emergency medical technicians assisted KEMH personnel in placing the man into an ambulance, which transported him to the hospital for further medical attention.”

Major Barrett St Vincent Dill, general manager of BHC, said the victim was working for a subcontractor and was painting the property.

“One of our property officers was immediately dispatched to review [the situation] and file a report and submit it back to me. We are conducting a full investigation of our own and as soon as we have more information we will share it.

“We also are concerned about the injury to the worker and how he’s doing. That will all be part of our investigation.”
