Robber has prison sentence reduced
A man who admitted an armed robbery in which he was accidentally shot by his partner in crime has had his sentenced reduced by the Court of Appeal.
Taariq Clarke had been sentenced to serve 7½ years in prison for aggravated burglary and using a firearm, but the Appeal Panel found that he should have received a greater discount for his guilty plea.
Prior to his sentencing, the Supreme Court heard that Clarke and another man entered a North Shore, Hamilton Parish home on May 14, 2014, with the second man holding a firearm.
The burglars took two phones from three young men who were inside the house, but as the suspects began to leave the property, victims heard a firearm go off. Police later found a trail of blood leading out of the house.
Clarke later went to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound. He initially claimed he had been shot while travelling along Vesey Street before confessing to being involved in the burglary.
He later provided police with a statement, which led to the arrest and conviction of a second suspect.
While the Court of Appeal heard that the 7½ year sentence represented a 35 per cent discount for a sentence that should have been 12 years, the panel found that he was entitled to a discount of 50 per cent for his willingness to assist police with their investigation.
As a result, the panel replaced the sentence with one of 6 years in prison.
