Robinson found guilty of attempted murder

A 56-year-old man who launched a frenzied knife attack on a woman more than three years ago has been found guilty of attempted murder.

Alan Robinson repeatedly stabbed Vernica Tucker in the chest and abdomen leaving the knife in her chest and also assaulted his housemate Kevin Arorash in December 2012.

At the end of last week jurors at the Supreme Court unanimously found Robinson guilty of attempted murder, possessing a bladed article in a public place and assaulting Mr Arorash.

He was remanded in custody and will reappear at court on May 1 for a sentencing date to be set. Previously prosecutor Nicole Smith told the jury that the charges related to an incident on the evening of December 11, 2012, when Ms Tucker visited Mr Arorash, a friend who shared a Rocky Lane home with Robinson and his brother.

Ms Tucker, now 46, decided to catch the bus home just after 10pm and Mr Arorash walked her to the main road, using his motorcycle to provide light.

However, while walking along Rocky Lane, Ms Smith said Robinson jumped out of some trees and brought a knife to Mr Arorash’s throat. She said his coat jacket prevented the knife from touching the victim, but in the ensuing struggle Mr Arorash and his bike fell to the ground, where Robinson punched him.

Robinson then attacked Ms Tucker, stabbing her with the knife several times, leaving the knife lodged in her body before fleeing the scene.

He ran back to the house and barricaded himself inside, arming himself with another knife. Police later broke into the property and arrested him.

Last week’s verdict brings to an end a case that dates back over three years.

In July 2013 Robinson was detained indefinitely at Westgate after being found unfit to stand trial on the charges.

A Supreme Court jury found that he was not fit to plead to any of the charges because of his mental illness.

Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves ordered he be detained at Westgate “until such time as the Governor’s discretion is known” — meaning no date was set for his release. Robinson has been remanded in custody at Westgate since the order was made.
