Working together to make a difference

People from six continents are on the island with an international organisation that brings communities together through volunteer service and music.

Mat Rowe, Jennifer Brown, Lenize Dos Santos, Vicky He, Miguel Samaniego and Rafael Schneider are among 100 cast members from 21 different countries taking part in the Up With People programme.

For 21-year-old Ms Brown, from Sweden, it was precisely the diversity of the cast members that brought her on this journey, as well as a chance to make new friends.

“A lot of us are just looking for something more and wanted to do more in the world,” Ms Dos Santos, from Cape Verde in Africa, added.

The 24-year-old chose to embark on the journey because of the travel opportunities and to learn about new cultures.

But knowing that she gets to volunteer and impact the community is also important, she added.

Mr Schneider, 21, from Brazil, said the experience takes people out of their “bubble” and “gives you perspective”.

“I came because what attracts me is proving people from different countries can get along and work together to make a difference,” Ms He, 21, from China, added. “You’re really connected to the community and also get to give back through the performance.”

To 29-year-old Mr Samaniego, from the United States, “the adventure of life is so addicting”, and he wanted to experience what the world has to offer first-hand.

And for Mr Rowe, travelling with UWP is part of a family legacy — his mother travelled with them 30 years ago.

The diversity of the members appealed to him, too, as well as showing that “together you can make a big impact”.

The cast members are staying with local host families for the two weeks, during which time they will be participating in various volunteer and educational activities.

They will also be performing four music and dance shows at the Ruth Seaton James Centre on April 28, 29 and 30.
