Members of the Lighthouse Road community in Southampton came out to clean up their area as part of the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s Neighbourhood Beautification Project.

According to a spokesman, more than a dozen volunteers — mostly area residents — worked for three hours on Saturday to make the area near the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse more attractive.

“Neighbourhood leader Dave Blakeney made the application to be part of the programme and pulled together residents from areas surrounding the stretch of road they focused on this past Saturday,” the spokesman said. “The team worked on the west side of Lighthouse Road from South Shore Road to St Anne’s Road.”

Mr Blakeney said: “These efforts are done out of love for our island. We are Bermudians and residents working together to shine our light for the community and tourists who visit our island.”

The cleanup effort was also assisted by SAL Limited, Precision Landscaping, Keep Bermuda Beautiful and the Southampton Parish Council.

Volunteers previously assisted a cleanup of the Horseshoe Road area as part of the initiative. Karla Lacey, chief operating officer at the BTA, said the body is looking to partner with other neighbourhood groups around the island for further cleanup projects.

“Now that two neighbourhoods have completed phase one, we’ll be expanding the programme over the coming months to additional areas,” she said. “Residents who are interested in taking part can contact the BTA for more information on how to do so.”
