Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise is the first feature length documentary about the iconic writer, poet, performer and civic rights activist

An award-winning documentary about Dr Maya Angelou and Oscar winner Tom Hanks’ latest feature film are to screen at the Bermuda Weekend Film Series next Sunday.

Screening at 3pm, A Hologram for the King stars Hanks as a freshly divorced American businessman who arrives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with the mission of securing the deal of a lifetime with the Saudi government.

He is baffled by local customs and stymied by an opaque bureaucracy, but finds his footing with the help of a wisecracking taxi driver (Alexander Black) and a beautiful Saudi doctor (Sarita Choudhury).

Based on Dave Eggers’ novel of the same name, the film is rated ‘R’.

Screening at 5.15pm, Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise is the first feature-length documentary about the late Dr Angelou, the iconic writer, poet, performer and civil rights activist who overcame racism and devastating abuse to become a powerful cultural voice in the United States and beyond.

This unprecedented film celebrates Dr Angelou by weaving her words with rare and intimate archival photographs and videos as well as a remarkable series of interviews with friends and family including former President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Common, Alfre Woodard, Cicely Tyson, Quincy Jones, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, John Singleton and Dr Angelou’s son, Guy Johnson.

The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, has won Best Documentary awards at the Boulder and Fort Myers film festivals. It is rated ‘15’. Both films will be shown at the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI.
