Special gift: Pittsfield officers Darren Derby and John Bessi donate an Olympic torch to Bermuda’s Special Olympics via Superintendent James Howard and Olympic chairwoman Alicia Zuill
A popular United States initiative, the Basketball Cop Foundation, has made its first international donation, with a gift to the Bermuda Police Service.
Inspector Scott Devine of the Community Action Team has been tasked with finding a good home for the portable hoop, presented by visiting police and the Fire Chief of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
The foundation started in Florida in January, after an officer sent to tackle a noise complaint found a group of youngsters playing basketball in the street and joined their game for a few minutes. Hoops and basketballs were subsequently donated across the US.
