Ideas for Cross Island site sought
The Cross Island Legacy Committee has received a host of suggestions for the final usage of the Dockyard site, but are still looking for more suggestions.
They said some of the ideas included a “city” of shipping container businesses, a youth hostel and housing for seniors.
Wayne Caines, chairman of the committee, said: “We’ve had some brilliant ideas. However, we want even more.
“We want 60,000 ideas so that we know we have had the total involvement of the community in the process of trying to decide the best use of the land once the America’s Cup is over.”
The nine-acre Cross Island site, constructed using material dredged from the North Channel, is already set to be used as the event village for next year’s America’s Cup.
While the site had initially been earmarked for a marina, facilities for Marine and Ports and a marine college, a court judgment overturned that intended end use. Since then, the committee has been seeking input from the public.
Each submission will be judged according to a matrix, factoring in financial, economic and social benefits, before a recommendation is made by the committee — although there remains the possibility that the island may host the America’s Cup again.
According to the committee, one suggestion was to use containers to create shops, cafés and residential units, along with a community space. The submission stated: “Put a multipurpose open event facility adjacent to the container city.
“The city could be part units that are fixed there and available for rent, and partly open plots that locals can rent and put their own shipping container units on.
“It would be flexible and give a new opportunity to entrepreneurs and residents.
“It would also fit with the maritime theme of Dockyard, and create more critical mass as a destination.”
Another suggestion was a three-star hotel, youth hostel, sailing school and water sports centre, restaurant and apartments, arguing that the multi-purpose use would encourage more people into Dockyard at night and would provide significant economic and financial benefits to Bermuda.
Submission forms are available at post offices around the island and online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/9W6Q2MG. The deadline for submissions is July 31.
