Two Canadian tourists have had their “faith restored in human nature” after a local taxi driver went above and beyond the call of duty to return the backpack they accidentally left in his cab.

Jo and Phil Mather, who are visiting the island from Ontario, Canada, for the third time, were unpacking their bags from the taxi and were in a hurry to meet with Ms Mather’s sister.

In their haste they left the backpack, which contained an iPad and, crucially, their medications for high blood pressure and glaucoma, in the cab.

Ms Mather recalled: “We called the airport and they said they would call the taxi companies. I called everywhere, left names and numbers. Nothing happened, but we needed our meds.

“We phoned our daughter in Canada and she went to the pharmacy that we go to and e-mailed us a copy of our transcripts so at least we had something here that we could follow up on.

“But about half an hour after that she called us and said, ‘You won’t believe this’.

“The pharmacy had called her to tell her that the taxi driver had found the bag, found the address and number of the pharmacy and phoned them in Canada.

“The pharmacy knew exactly what was going as they had just spoken to my daughter.

“They took his details, phoned my daughter gave her the details who phoned me and I phoned the taxi driver and he turned up with the bag at the cottage we are renting on Marley Beach. My reaction was, ‘wow!’

“As the afternoon wore on we didn’t know what had happened and then this restored our faith in human nature that he had gone to such lengths to do that. We were just amazed that he would do that.

“It would have been a drag to have to sort out the meds.”

The Royal Gazette reached out to the good Samaritan who said he did not want to be identified.
