Roll up for Winter Wonderland

A special family event will top off a year of fundraising for Rosa’s Cantina and Chopsticks.

The sister restaurants are continuing their partnership with the Foster Parent Association and Big Brothers Big Sisters to host the Winter Wonderland street festival on Sunday.

This is the final part of their three-month drive to raise funds for the charities, as well as the children who are in foster care or with BBBS so they can have a memorable Christmas.

“It started off because most of these children might not necessarily have the greatest Christmas because they could have just been placed or they’re in a home where the family is doing enough to just support them but there’s no extra money coming in for gifts or fun,” Lindsay Durham, the director of operations and human resources at both restaurants, told The Royal Gazette.

“We want to celebrate the children of Bermuda, show them that they’re special and we want them to enjoy the Christmas season. It’s a memory for them,” Ms Durham, who is also the head of the Foster Parent Association, added.

“We want to encourage not only foster children and children with Big Brothers Big Sisters, we want the family to come out and have a blast.”

Throughout October, the restaurants sold the Winter Wonderland cocktail to raise money for the two charities

And, since November, customers have been able to pick an angel from the special angel tree — each one representing a child in foster care or with BBBS. They were then asked to buy a present for the child, whose age and gender was written on the angel, or they could donate money towards a gift.

According to Ms Durham, there has been an overwhelming response to the initiative, with all angels gone and a mountain of gifts ready to be handed out at a private party for all the children.

She thanked the public for their generosity, as well as RenaissanceRe for wanting to take all the rest of the angels. She also applauded Goslings, adding: “None of this would have happened if Gosling’s was not behind Rosa’s and Chopsticks from the beginning — they supported anything and everything we did, including the Winter Wonderland.

“And we want to really thank MS Amlin Bermuda for donating $10,000 so that we can have this street festival.”

The event will be held from 4pm to 9pm on Front Street by the number one car park.

Food will be supplied by Butterfield and Vallis. Ms Durham said: “The event is a family friendly event, but all of the free stuff is for the children. If the adults want food, we have some on sale for them — obviously we are getting donations and we can only manage so much food.”

Six fun castles have been lined up along with performances from PlayList Management entertainers, Gombey Warriors and DanceSations.

There will also be face painting, train rides, cotton candy, popcorn, and a photo booth. King Jyrus will DJ at the event, which will be hosted by BBBS director Patrina O’Connor-Paynter, who is also known as Power 95 radio station’s “Power Girl”, and Bermuda Idol 2016 winner Jesse Seymour will also be performing.
