Deadline looms for tourism ambassadors
Tourism ambassadors are being urged to renew their official membership before the end of the year.
The Certified Tourism Ambassador programme, a Bermuda Tourism Authority initiative administered by the Bermuda Hospitality Institute, set up two years ago, aims to train and equip the island’s hospitality workers to go “above and beyond” in making visitors’ experiences more memorable.
Malika Cartwright, BHI’s executive director, said in a press release: “The Certified Tourism Ambassador programme is nearing the end of its second year in operation on the island.
“We’ve heard so many great success stories about the difference this has made to local hospitality employees who have a better understanding of the island’s culture and history and are able to start conversations with tourists with greater pride and ease.
“In addition to those milestones, this year Bermuda’s CTA’s took part in a number of local clean-up efforts, which positively contributed to the look and feel of our community.
“This is why we are encouraging people to stay up to date with their CTA membership, so they can continue to stand out and make the best impression possible in 2017.”
The press release says BHI encourages all current CTA’s to renew their membership in order to retain their certification. In order to be eligible for renewal, you have to have visited local attractions, restaurants or businesses throughout the year listed on the CTA website and then record your points on your individual CTA page.
The costs for renewal is $30 by December 31. Those who do not renew by this date will have to take the classes again in 2017.
Eron Woods is one young local chef who benefited from the CTA training.
The 21-year-old said: “For young people it’s a great resume builder to be able to say you are a Certified Tourism Ambassador, but overall it’s good for anyone who comes into contact with our visitors.
“If you work in a frequent tourism spot and happen to have your CTA badge or ID card it feels good knowing you can help to enhance a guest’s experience on the island.
“Bermudians are known as the friendliest people, so this helps us continue that legacy. Plus, the classes are free, you just have to pay a minimal fee each year to renew.”
In addition to serving as tourism ambassadors for the island, CTA’s are also entitled to discounts at select vendors throughout the island.
New classes run from January 10 to February 23 at Connectech, 41 Cedar Avenue. For more information visit www.bhi.bm, e-mail admin@bhi.bm or call 295-5049.
