Boy says God wants him to give toys to needy

Generous spirit: Yu-Udai Trott-Hayward, left 5, donates toys to kids in need this Christmas

This is truly the season of giving for five-year-old Yu-Udai Trott-Hayward, who for the second year yesterday gave away his own toys to less fortunate children. Asked why he wanted to give away his own toys, he said: “Because God wants us to give things away because some people don’t have toys.”

He added that it made him feel sad to know that other boys and girls might not find presents beneath their tree on Christmas morning, and it made him feel good to help other people.

His mother, Aisha Trott, said that what was originally intended as a way to make Yu-Udai appreciate the gifts that he receives has grown, with her son suggesting toys to give away throughout the year.

“He is a very blessed child,” she said. “He get’s tons of stuff all year, and I wasn’t sure how much he appreciated that. So last year we just, on a whim, packed up some of his stuff and came down here.

“He is learning, and through the year he will say, ‘Mommy, can we give this away?’”

She said she was thrilled to see the giveaway grow from last year, noting the table covered from end-to-end in toys and books donated by her son and parents in the community.

“We have received phone calls today of people tearing up,” she said. “He is all excited because he is in the newspaper.

“It’s amazing to see so many people out here today because last year it was just me and him.

“We came on the spur of the moment. We had one or two people pop by.

“This year to come and see the table already here and people waiting, bringing in toys, I wasn’t expecting any of that.

“Hopefully we can get more children involved. I was hoping that more children would learn the meaning of giving up these things, but this is a start. Next year hopefully we will get more kids that participate.

“I am amazed at the amount of toys that people have brought. It is still early, but 100 kids could receive a toy today.”
