Man fined after admitting drug offence

A Pembroke man received $1,750 in fines this morning after he was caught by police with cannabis and cocaine.

Yukie Pearman, 22, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to charges of possessing the drugs in an incident on October 22 last year.

The court heard that at around 1am that day, officers were on mobile patrol in the Middletown area when they noticed Pearman walking near the junction with Curving Avenue.

Pearman was walking in the direction of the officers, but he abruptly turned and began to walk away upon seeing them.

When the officers attempted to approach him, Pearman began to run, jumping over a wall, but the police were able to keep track of him by the light of his cell phone.

Pearman was arrested after emerging from a wooded area and a search revealed twists containing 5.31g of cannabis and 1.02g of cocaine freebase, better known as crack, in his pocket.

Noting previous convictions for similar offences, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Pearman $1,000 for the cannabis charge and $750 for the cocaine.
