The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda is looking to follow the yellow brick road with their next production, The Wizard of Oz.

While the production is not set to hit the stage at the Earl Cameron Theatre until October, casting will start in early June.

A spokesman for the theatre organisation said: “Following the success of last year’s production of The Magic of The Musicals, the society had a very difficult task to select a worthy successor.

“After much deliberation, the society chose The Wizard of Oz. This is a much loved musical, in which a Kansas farm girl travels over the rainbow to discover the magical power of home.

“The musical has been entertaining audiences for generations and features such well-known songs as Over The Rainbow.

“The production will give the audience the opportunity of seeing what promises to be an outstanding set, designed by Cleo Pettitt. She has been challenged to ensure the yellow brick road leads to a successful and memorable show.”

John Barnett, president of the society’s executive committee, said: “For 57 years, G&S has brought a wide range of hit musicals and concerts to the stage. This year, we wanted to produce a musical which was very well known and would give many young people the opportunity to be on the stage for the first time.

“The Wizard of Oz fulfills that objective as we expect to have two teams of 20 young people performing on alternate nights. We will be looking for talented young people over the age of 8 to be Munchkins.”

Auditions will be held between June 2 and June 4, with performances running between October 5 and October 14.
