Police name latest road fatality

Police have confirmed 21-year-old model Sophie Fraser-Smith as the woman killed in a traffic collision on Tuesday.

Her death is the eighth on Bermuda’s roads this year.

According to a police spokesman, Ms Fraser-Smith was seriously injured at about 3.10pm when a truck collided with the motorcycle she was riding along Middle Road in Southampton, near the junction with Scenic Heights Pass.

“She was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance but later succumbed to her injuries,” the spokesman said. “A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support Ms Fraser-Smith’s family at this tragic time.

“The truck driver, believed to be a 40-year-old Pembroke man, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. He complied with a demand for a breath samples, passed the test and was later released on police bail pending further inquiries.”

In the immediate wake of the crash, traffic diversions were put in place near Heron Bay Primary School for several hours while collision investigators examined the scene.

The police spokesman confirmed that both vehicles involved in the collision have been impounded, and that the investigation into the crash was ongoing.

Any witnesses that have not already come forward are asked to contact Constable Walter Jackson on 247-1230, or by e-mail at wjackson@bps.bm.

Ms Fraser-Smith, a former Bermuda High School student, was highlighted by The Royal Gazette in 2015 for her modelling in online catalogues and print magazines in London, working for brands including Asos, Pretty Little Thing, New Look and Vavavoom.
