Girl power on the agenda for UN day

It is all about the girls tomorrow when Bermuda plans to celebrate UN International Day of the Girl Child.

Carolyn Thomas Ray, of the Human Rights Commission, and organiser of the annual Bermuda event with husband Chris Ray, said the day was designed to “encourage girls to broaden their interests and to raise awareness of girls’ rights globally”.

Ms Ray added the event had two main goals.

She said: “The first is to educate and raise awareness of human rights abuses of girls as the largest global demographic in poverty.

“The Human Rights Commission will be providing education about human rights infringements such as forced marriage, withdrawal from education, sexual and gender based violence, nutritional deficiencies because girls often eat last, child mothers and cultural bias. Secondly, it is to expose Bermuda’s girls to, and encourage their participation in, science, technology, engineering and mathematics and sports activities, some of which they may not have much exposure to because of cultural gender bias.”

The event is free and for girls only.

The day is marked around the world to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face around the world.

Ms Ray added: “Girls can come for all or part of the afternoon and the idea is that they try new activities.

“There will be a new feature this year of an activity passport to get stamps and then receive a book prize.

“Some of the activities already enjoy high girl participation but they are hoping to increase their visibility.”

Among the activities, run by volunteers, are cricket, football, archery, fencing, the Sea Cadets and robotics.

In addition, there will be a DJ and the Women’s Resource Centre, plus food and drinks from Sweet Stixx and Ashley’s Lemonade.

The UN official date was Wednesday, but the island event will take place tomorrow at the National Sports Centre and pool from 2pm to 5pm.
