Masterworks to host New Years Open House

Open: The Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art

The Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art will be putting work by Georgia O’Keeffe on display to celebrate the new year — and the museum’s anniversary.

On January 1 the museum, located in the Botanical Gardens, will hold a New Years Open House featuring Banyan Tree with Palms, a graphite drawing by O’Keeffe.

O’Keeffe is the most famous female American artist of the 20th Century. Best known for her paintings of large flowers, she travelled to Bermuda in 1933 after a diagnosis of psycho neurosis and found solace and inspiration during her time on the island.

The 1934 work was drawn during the artist’s second visit to the island, and will be a part of the museum’s permanent collection.

A spokeswoman said that the drawing will be featured for one day only, before being added to the Masterworks’s 10th Anniversary Exhibition, which is set to open on March 2.

Tom Butterfield, founder and creative director at Masterworks, said: “What a wonderful way for us to celebrate our 30th year as a collection this year and herald in the new year and a new decade for us as a museum with this iconic artist.”

Along with the work by O’Keeffe, the open house on Monday will feature giveaways and refreshments.
