Lawyer to lead CPC
Jevon Williams, a lawyer at AIG, was announced as the new chairman for the Coalition for the Protection of Children.
Dwayne Caines, a spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service, was named as deputy chairman.
Sheelagh Cooper, founder of the family assistance charity, will remain on the board but is stepping down as chairwoman after 26 years’ service.
Mr Williams said the new role “spoke to me and resonated with me”, and called the board “proud and humbled with the impact the organisation has made in Bermuda”.
The Coalition will seek accreditation as “a formality around the culture that we already have in place”, he said, and will shortly hold a strategic meeting to evaluate its programmes.
Mr Williams acknowledged that an organisation whose clients are mainly female now has two men at the helm, but pointed out that women continue to make up most of the board.
Ms Cooper will remain on the Coalition’s board, but will concentrate her work on Habitat for Humanity Bermuda, a charity that works closely with the CPC. “It’s wonderful — 27 years is really plenty of years,” Ms Cooper said.
Mr Williams brings “great passion” to the role, she said, while Kelly Hunt continues to serve as “a terrific executive director”.
“I could not leave this organisation in better hands,” Ms Cooper added.
