Old containers used in Shelly Bay revamp

Old shipping containers could be given a new lease of life at an island beach.

The Bermuda Tourism Authority has proposed temporary concessions based in recycled containers at Shelly Bay as part of a plan to make Bermuda's beaches more attractive.

The BTA unveiled the proposals at a meeting for residents in the area last Tuesday and has posted an expression-of-interest form online.

Glenn Jones, BTA director of public and stakeholder relations, said: “Residents who attended gave us their viewpoints and, along with help from our government partners, we began making adjustments.

“Our next step is to determine what level of interest exists among local entrepreneurs and then we'll return to the same community to report our findings.”

Mr Jones said the community meeting was organised by MPs to keep residents informed and find out what they think.

He said: “It was important for our Bermuda Tourism Authority team to consult with the community in the surrounding area because we consider local buy-in to be a critical part of creating something that is appealing to visitors and locals alike.

Mr Jones added the move is to improve the offerings available to both local and visiting families, “once concessionaires that meet their needs are in place”.

The BTA held an information session for entrepreneurs at Francis Patton School, North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, on Tuesday.
