Police report two boats running aground

Three women were treated for minor injuries after a boat hit the rocks in the Great Sound.

A police spokesman said marine unit officers were sent to a half-submerged boat in the waters near Pearl Island on Monday night.

The police found that two private boats had already taken four people, believed to have been on board, to Albuoy's Point in Hamilton.

Three women, aged 27, 32 and 37, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, and discharged.

An unidentified man, said to be unhurt, is thought to have left Albuoy's Point area shortly after the two boats arrived. The spokesman said the suspected driver of the boat was arrested and released without charge because of insufficient evidence.

Marine police also dealt with a boat with three people onboard that ran aground near the Head of the Lane maritime channel marker off Warwick about 9.30pm the same night.

The skipper, a 34-year-old Devonshire woman, was unhurt and arrested on suspicion of piloting or being at the helm of a boat while impaired.

She was later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The police spokesman added it was unclear if the passengers had suffered any injuries.

Police have appealed for witnesses to both incidents.
