Medley of music for Mother’s Day

The Bermuda Philharmonic Society is to perform a medley of musical pieces to mark Mother's Day.

And aspiring young musicians are invited to apply for scholarships and bursaries to pursue their studies.

The family-friendly programme on Sunday will include Mendlessohn's Octet, Elgar's Serenade, as well as a selection of brass quartet piece.

Soloists Hayley Skurowski will perform Piazzola's Oblivion, and Laura Springham will perform Hoffmeister's Viola Concerto.

Ms Skurowski said she was “excited” to perform the arrangement.

She added: “It is a deeply beautiful work with a sailing flute line.”

Ms Springham said that it was not common to hear a viola concerto.

She added: “These pieces in this programme are a labour of love by local musicians who would love to share this music with all of you.”

Violinist Alison Black will lead the concert at St John's Church, Pembroke, at 4pm.

Tickets are $35 with children under 18 admitted free of charge.

They can be purchased on Ptix or at the door.

All proceeds benefit the Bermuda Philharmonic's scholarship and bursary fund.

Awards were presented to 17 young musicians last year to cover music lessons, camps and other costs.

A spokeswoman for the society said the awards “are designed to assist young musicians — who have played for at lest one year — who show potential and commitment and that require financial support to continue studying a musical instrument”.

She said: “Our scholarships aim to provide support to gifted young musicians and champion them so that they continue to grow and develop in the musical field.”

The deadline for applications for the awards is June 8.
