McWhirter named journalist of the year

A senior reporter at The Royal Gazette has won a Best of Bermuda award.

The Bermudian magazine singled out Fiona McWhirter for its annual journalism prize in recognition of her investigations on a wide range of subjects.

Ms McWhirter said: “I'm delighted and very grateful to be recognised and, as a newcomer to this incredible island, feel honoured to be listed alongside such inspirational people, organisations and work that I respect and admire.

“I am so lucky to be in a job that allows me to listen to individuals sharing their experiences, thoughts and expertise — I am for ever thankful to the people who feel passionate, brave and open enough to do this.

“There never seems to be a shortage of subject matter here in Bermuda and I'm looking forward to more opportunities to discover and deliver the news.”

The judges said: “She interviews local politicians, reports on the latest court cases and reveals community issues through her clear, professional reporting in story after story.

“She has covered a lot of the major stories recently and impressed our judges with her high morals and ethics.”

Ms McWhirter joined The Royal Gazette in June 2018 after a stint as deputy news editor at the Scottish Daily Mail in Glasgow.

She earlier worked as a reporter in Aberdeen, Scotland, and Adelaide, Australia.

Dexter Smith, the Editor of The Royal Gazette, said: “This is a very deserving award for Fiona. She hit the ground running upon joining us, the mark of a good pro, and has continued apace.

“It feels as though she has been here far longer than 12 months, given the volume and significance of her work.

“Alongside newly minted investigations editor Sam Strangeways, Fiona helps to provide a one-two punch that is unrivalled in local journalism.

“We are grateful to have her as part of our team.”
