Humberto leads to ‘Blue’ milk shortage

Short supply: a carton of Dunkley’s pasteurised milk

The island’s milk has run low as a result of poor weather, but will be topped up “in short order”, according to Michael Dunkley.Mr Dunkley, the owner of milk wholesaler Dunkley’s Dairy, said yesterday that “the supply is on its way back” of the blue carton milk, regular pasteurised cow’s milk, which comes from local farms rather than the reconstituted varieties. The Smith’s North MP added: “With the heat in the middle of summer, that’s typically when we have a shortage. But it was affected as well by Hurricane Humberto. When you go through unpleasant weather, cows are not going to produce. Places were also out of electricity for a short period of time.”Humberto, which grazed the island on September 18, left significant damage at many of the island’s farms.Richard Bascome, the general manager at Westover Farm in Sandys, reported last month that the storm had disrupted the farm’s milking schedule.Paul Almeida, who operates the Almeida Dairy Farm in St George’s, attributed the shortfall to “heat stress and the hurricane”. Mr Almeida added: “The supply is coming up again. Every summer we get a shortage; cows like the colder weather better than the heat.”
