Aecon and Skyport celebrated Safety Week – marking Aecon’s 15th annual Safety Week with a special event at the site of the new airport terminal.

It was the third Safety Week in Bermuda and is a company-wide initiative that is held at every Aecon project site across Canada and internationally, with approximately 12,000 people in attendance.

Frank Ross, Executive Director, Infrastructure, Aecon Construction, says: “We are proud to have instilled an excellent safety culture at the airport redevelopment project. Safety is our top priority and we are pleased to have celebrated our third Safety Week here in Bermuda.”

Aecon and Skyport employees, as well as contractors and sub-contractors working on the construction of the new airport terminal were on-hand on Friday to enjoy the event. Marty Harris, SVP & Executive Lead, Civil East at Aecon, gave a presentation on the importance of Aecon’s core value of Safety First. He also highlighted a few proactive safety behaviours that have occurred on the project.

Workers then attended a screening of “Toolbox Talk” - a video presentation given by Jean-Louis Servranckx, President and Chief Executive Officer of Aecon. His presentation covered the importance of focusing on mental health as a fundamental part of safety. Under the banner ‘Stop the Silence’, Aecon is working hard to create an environment where workers feel comfortable to seek help and support for their emotional and mental health issues, as it believes this will contribute to a safer work environment and better quality of life for employees.

Preston Swan, Vice President of Clinical Operations, Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI) spoke on mental health in Bermuda. MWI provided workers information on how to seek help for mental health related concerns. Following the speakers and presentation, Bermudian Health and Safety Advisor James Gould announced the unveiling of the new safety poster, which will be displayed around construction sites and offices. It was unveiled by two Bermudian Joint Health & Safety Committee Members, Michael Parsons and Jason Doers.

Shazar Hack, Technical Director, Skyport, says: “Safety is one of our core values and is a standard which is reinforced by Aecon and Skyport. We are proud that the LFWIA Redevelopment Project continues to be the benchmark for construction projects in Bermuda, with its’ heightened awareness of safety.”

All attendees were treated to a breakfast and were given a gift upon arrival as a token of Aecon’s appreciation of everyone’s commitment to working safely.

Aecon prides itself on its commitment to safety and has made ‘Safety First’ their number one core company value. The company has an exemplary record with a strong focus on best practices and continuous improvement.
