The Salvation Army launched its annual effort to raise funds for the needy over the holiday season yesterday.

The Christmas Kettle Campaign supports the hamper programme for seniors and families, a toy drive for children and hot meals for the homeless and seniors.

Neville Tyrrell, the acting health minister, attended the kick-off event at the City Hall.

Mr Tyrrell said: “It gives me great joy to advocate for an organisation whose whole being is synonymous with helping others.

“The Salvation Army has been serving Bermuda’s less fortunate since 1896 and their numerous programmes and services continue to be a lifesaver for many on our island.”

Money collected will also go towards the group’s emergency shelter, the Salvation Army’s Lifeskills Management Programme, Addictions Programming and Pathway of Hope Programme.

People can help by donating to the charity’s distinctive red collection buckets across the island.
