Hundreds found warmth on a chilly Sunday as a charitable chef once again served the community a free Christmas dinner yesterday. The hot meal was delivered with music and gift packs for the needy, as a team of volunteers pitched in with Michiko Campbell, a sous chef at the nearby Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton.Mr Campbell, the maker of Chiko’s Smokey Rub, said: “I’m happy — it’s definitely a heart-warming feeling. It’s just the overall experience.”It was the fifth and final Christmas dinner held at Albuoy’s Point since 2014, with Mr Campbell planning to switch to serving up his next free meals in the summer. There were 343 meals delivered to seniors’ homes, more than double the 143 given out last year, and close to 300 dinners had been given out in the first two hours. One facility, Cynthia’s Rest Home in Devonshire, brought over its residents for a day out.Mr Campbell called the response “awesome” and said he had been showered with compliments about his cooking, while one guest told him: “From the heart — thank you.”Outdoor heaters kept spirits high, and singers included Jesse Seymour and Ramon Clarke.Guests enjoyed turkey, ham, stuffing with gravy, cassava pie, cornbread, mashed potato, Spanish rice and plenty of dessert.Teen volunteer McKenzie-Kohl Tuckett said: “I’ve had some people asking, is this true? Is it really free? They’re so grateful for it.”She added: “Every year it does very well providing for the community. I volunteered last year — you can definitely see the growth.”Nearby, volunteers from Bermuda General Agency distributors gave out free food and toiletries.Lisa Foggo, a buyer for BGA, said large vendors had contributed the items to give out, adding: “It’s amazing to see how people respond. It’s nice to give back.“It has definitely grown. We won’t know until the end, but we’re expecting to serve 1,000 people.”Peter Clarke, a BGA sales manager, said: “This is the Christmas spirit, true to form. All these companies got together with Chiko to help — he’s done a fabulous job.”At 5pm, as he prepared to sing for guests, Mr Clarke said: “It’s been nice here, very relaxed. It’s just a good feeling.”
