School pupils were among those who showed off their wackiest socks in aid of an island autism support charity yesterday.Tomorrow’s Voices held the Autism Rocks Socks Day Home Edition event to help raise funds. Stacy Hill, the funding and development officer at Tomorrow’s Voices, said that the event was “wonderful”. She added: “It was a fun way for us to get the community together.“I’m still uploading pictures to our Instagram Story and our Facebook page.”The event was one of several organised by the charity to coincide with Autism Awareness Month. She added that the events served two purposes — to raise funds and awareness. Ms Hill said that the charity had decided to move the sock party online, rather than scrap it because of the Covid-19 lockdown. Pupils from St George’s Preparatory School and Somersfield Academy took part. Ms Hill said that some involved held online video chats to show off their socks to each other and posted images and videos to social media. Participants had taken about 100 photographs. Standout socks included a pair adorned with pom-poms and glitter, and a pair of Superman socks complete with an attached cape.Children who took part were asked to donate $2 to the charity and adults gave $5. Ms Hill said: “We rely on the community and for companies to support us.” Ms Hill added that public support funded 80 per cent of the costs of the charity’s clients. However, she said that it was a tough time for island charities. Ms Hill explained: “A lot of the support we normally get, we’re unsure if we are going to get it because everything is so focused on Covid-19, as it should be.”She said island charities should “keep pushing and keep having faith”. Ms Hill added: “We’re all in this together and we will come out on the other side.”
