Relief is on the way, home bakers

Supermarkets have risen to the challenge of a yeast shortage caused by people stuck at home baking their own bread.Vernon Hassell, vice president of purchasing and procurement for MarketPlace stores, said their wholesaler had promised more Fleischmann’s dry yeast will be available early next month.Mr Hassell added: “Our supply chain is secure as we continue to receive regular shipments.“For some product lines, we are receiving less varieties from our suppliers, due to overseas manufacturers shifting to producing only their top selling items.”The availability of eggs has also been affected by shelter in place bakers.A spokeswoman for Lindo’s said: “There is a worldwide shortage of yeast which has been exacerbated by everyone in lockdown baking. “Eggs are similarly affected by the huge increase in demand and a slight shortfall in supply, globally, which caused prices to go up, though it has recovered somewhat now.“A major yeast maker said the shortage was an international problem.John Heilman, the Vice President of manufacturing for Fleischmann’s Yeast maker AB Mauri, told Slate magazine it could be two months before shoppers got a consistent supply.Mr Heilman said: “I’ve been with the company for five years and this is by far the highest demand I’ve ever seen.”But Lindo’s and MarketPlace added that a good selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, island-grown and imported, were available. The Lindo’s spokeswoman said its stores had no problem with fresh fruit, particularly the types in season.Mr Hassell added: “We continue to receive produce shipments twice a week from both our overseas and local suppliers. “We have also increased our variety of local produce in our stores as more is now available.”
