Almost 200 people raised more than $5,000 to help families in need after they joined a virtual race on the Bermuda Day holiday. The event was organised by members of the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club who wanted to uphold the tradition of running despite the cancellation of the half-marathon derby because of Covid-19 restrictions.Gayle Lindsay, a member of MAAC, said that 196 people registered for the event, which raised $5,320 through fees and donations. She added: “We’re grateful to everyone who supported the event and we’re pleased to be able to donate the funds to the Coalition for the Protection of Children to help support the Grateful Bread’s Families Supporting Families fundraising campaign.”Ms Lindsay explained earlier: “Our aim is to help people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the work being done by FSF therefore resonated strongly with us.” The tag line for the event was: “How far will you go for your parish on Bermuda Day?”People who registered had to select a parish to represent and then take part in a 30-minute walk or run on May 29.Results were based on the distance each person managed to cover and were combined to come up with a total.Ms Lindsay said: “The winning parish was Devonshire, accumulating 67.1 miles. “Our overall male and female race winners were Tommy Marshall and Rose-Anna Hoey, who managed to cover an impressive 4.9 miles and 4.88 miles respectively.”Pembroke came second with 58.7 miles and Smith’s secured third place on the podium with 54.7 miles.Hamilton Parish notched up 49.9 miles, Warwick runners and walkers reached 39 miles and Paget participants managed 29.4 miles.
